Innovation, trade and investment
Lancashire has always been a place where people get things done. From our engineering heritage to new industries in energy, digital and design, we have a long record of turning ideas into results.
The Lancashire Combined County Authority is working with partners to make sure innovation and investment continue to create good jobs and support local communities. Guided by the Lancashire Growth Plan, our focus is on practical progress, joining up plans for business, skills and transport so Lancashire grows in a way that benefits everyone.
We’re here to set priorities, build partnerships and prepare the ground for future investment.
Lancashire's priority sectors
The Lancashire Growth Plan identifies five sectors that can drive productivity, innovation and jobs. Each one builds on local strengths and supports the wider work in the Get Lancashire Working Plan and Joint Lancashire Transport Plan.
National security and resilience
Lancashire contributes directly to the UK’s security and defence industries through engineering, technology and logistics.
The combined county authority is helping partners plan for sustainable growth in this sector. Linking training and research with local supply chains so that new opportunities create lasting value for people and businesses in Lancashire.
Clean growth and nuclear
Lancashire has the expertise and infrastructure to play a leading role in clean energy. From Heysham’s nuclear power station to new work in hydrogen and low-carbon manufacturing, energy continues to be a major part of our economy.
We’re working with councils, colleges and employers to align skills, transport and planning around this sector. This helps local people prepare for future jobs and supports a balanced, reliable energy system.
Sustainable digital and AI
Digital industries are expanding quickly across Lancashire, supported by major projects such as the National Cyber Force HQ.
Through the Get Lancashire Working Plan, we’re coordinating digital skills and training so residents can take part in this growing sector. We’re also helping to link infrastructure and business support so companies can grow in well-connected locations identified in the Joint Lancashire Transport Plan.
Advanced engineering and manufacturing
Manufacturing remains one of Lancashire’s core strengths. Our businesses lead in aerospace, automotive, machinery and advanced materials.
We’re working with employers, the Lancashire Business Board, and training providers to plan for the next generation of engineers and technicians. By linking industry, skills and transport planning, we’re helping to keep production and good jobs in Lancashire.
Culture and tourism
Lancashire’s culture and character are central to our identity. Our creative industries, local festivals and heritage sites contribute to economic growth and community wellbeing.
We’re working with cultural organisations and councils to support local talent, make better use of venues, and connect residents and visitors through improved access and transport links.
